About St. Mary’s Health Care System

St. Mary’s Hospital opened its doors in 1906 to care for the people of Northeast Georgia and has been in continuous operation since 1938. The hospital was first accredited by the Joint Commission in 1954 with its most recent accreditation in 2012. St. Mary’s is a member of Trinity Health and is licensed for 196 beds. It offers a comprehensive range of services to the surrounding community and is the recipient of numerous awards for outstanding quality of care.

St. Mary’s Hospital has been a site for health professions education for many years, but just recently began teaching medical students. Medical students from the GRU-UGA Medical Partnership have rotated at St. Mary’s hospital since August 2011. The students have been well received by the physicians, patients, nursing, and other ancillary services. With the addition of the Internal Medicine residency Program, the positive relationship between St. Mary’s Hospital and the GRU/UGA Medical Partnership will continue to grow and provide a wide range of educational experiences for future physicians.

St. Mary’s Hospital has 10,000 annual discharges and a robust Hospitalist Program with 10 board certified physicians.  St. Mary’s has patients with a wide variety of illnesses and acuity that are admitted to the Internal Medicine services.

Off-site, St. Mary’s Health Care System operates a comprehensive Home Health care program, a 34 bed Alzheimer’s and Dementia care facility as well as a 12 bed Hospice House. St. Mary's Health Care System is dedicated to preparing the Internal Medicine residents, medical students, and clinical programs for the future practice of medicine.
